Army Cadets (ACF)

About:

The Army Cadet Force (ACF) is an Organisation that offers progressive training in a multitude of subjects from military training to adventurous training and first aid, at the same time as promoting achievement, discipline and good citizenship, to boys and girls aged 12 to 18. It has connections to the training of the British Army.

Although sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and being very similar in structure and activity, the ACF is not a branch of the British Armed Forces, and as such cadets are not subject to military 'call up'. A proportion of cadets do, however, go on to enlist in the armed forces in later life, and many of the organisation's leaders - formally termed 'Cadet Force Adult Volunteers', or informally 'Adult Instructors' - come from a previous cadet service or military background.

The ACF can trace its beginnings back to 1859, when it was formed in order to prepare youths to enlist in the army in anticipation of an invasion by the French. It remained in existence after no invasion materialised, thanks in part to the influence of pioneer social worker Miss Octavia Hill, because of its positive benefits on youths. The ACF is a registered charity.

Date: 29/11/06 Title: ACF Corps of Drums

The Branch has supported and sponsored Montagu School D Company  Royal Anglian Regiment ACF from the year of our formation.

On the formation of the Corps of Drums we decided that we would also do what we could to support them.

In 2004 the then Mayor of Wellingborough Councillor John Bailey asked if we could get a band to play at the Finedon Remembrance Service at which he was taking the Salute.

The Branch approached the Corps of Drums and they agreed to play at this parade. This was the beginning of an exciting time for the drums and they have forged links with Finedon ever since.

The Mayor was very impressed and soon afterwards informed me that he would be making a donation from the Mayors charity to the Corps of Drums at the end of his term of office. It was some time later that he told me that the donation would be £2000 towards the costs of new instruments and accruements.

In May 2005 the end of the term of office myself, Lt P Doyle of D Company and Cdt Sgt Major Hawkes attended the full council meeting in Wellingborough to receive the cheque.

It was decided that the Branch would put on a special presentations night in order that Councillor and Mrs Barbara Bailey could make a formal presentation.

The presentation of this cheque was a highlight for the Corps of Drums and since then they have continued to attend Remembrance Day at Finedon.

The Branch thanks them for the time and effort they give.
